Another Finish

With all the extra time I have, I was able to finish another WIP and cross it off my list. It has been sitting in my basket for quite some time and I figured if I sat down and concentrated on it enough it would quickly get finished. I used DMC 938 for the border and the alphabet as I didn't think I would have enough of Wood Trail to finish. I ended up using the entire skein of DMC to stitch the alphabet bands and border.

First Day Of School

Last month saw the first day of school for Amelie. She was so excited to start, especially since we had been counting down the days for the previous four months.

It's amazing how quiet the house has become with only Felix at home. I seem to get my chores done and dinner prepared most days before school pick-up time. I am actually finding I have more time for my stitching and crocheting as well. It's taken me almost a month to get into the new routine and catch up all the things that had been previously neglected, I am almost there so I hope to get many more projects finished.

The girls both wanted me to make something that they could give their teachers (3 all up) for Valentines Day. I decided to make them all mug warmers, which I placed around a mug full of chocolate hearts. The pattern is the same one I used for the previous mug cozy, but I added a heart to each of these.

Design: Crochet Mug Cozy & Sweet Heart
Yarn: Lincraft Superwash 8 ply - 100% Pure New Wool (colour 3008) & Moda Vera Gelato - 50% Acrylic/50% Cotton (colour 16)
Hook size: 4.00mm/US 6 & 3.25mm/US D

I have been busy crocheting every chance I get, designing my own patterns and using some from books I have purchased in the hope that this winter I can set up my Etsy store to sell my handmade work. I have made so many things for everyone else and I don't want to stop, so this is a good way of supporting my habit. I am experimenting with different yarns and it has not all been good. Even though the tension was correct, the hats and head warmers have turned out a little too small for my head. Maybe I have a big head or maybe I need to go up a hook size.

A Meeting With Friends

I had been putting off this post for a while because I thought Tanya may want to show it first, but sorry Tanya, my excitement has got the better of me.

Back in January the very talented Tanya of The Scarlett House fame came to Sydney on her way home from her holiday. My good friend Sandra organised for us to meet her for those short few hours at Sydney airport. Sandra's very kind husband drove us the long drive and patiently waited for us while we met up.

What a wonderful time we had meeting Tanya, and her friends and family. It all felt way too short and we all had so much to share. I made a small gift for Tanya so that she could remember our meeting.

Tanya very kindly gave me two of her wonderful charts, Mary Ann Louisa Boston and Jane Hopkins 1801. What a lovely surprise! Thank you Tanya for allowing us the opportunity to visit with you and thank you Sandra for organising this visit.

Crochet Craziness

You're probably wondering about the title of this post. I have been busy crocheting scarves, beanies and cowls despite the insanely hot weather we have been having. My excuse is I am preparing for a cold winter. I have been actually trying to make things I have pinned on Pinterest (trying to justify my Pinterest usage).

 Design: Chunky Rib Scarf
Designer: Being Spiffy
Hook: 10mm/US P
Yarn: Cleckheaton Country Wide - Milk (100% Pure New Wool)

I made a few changes as this yarn is about 14ply, so I only used one strand and I made it about 10 chains longer. I have a lovely model!

Next the kids wanted a big beanie that covered their ears and was a bit slouchy. They found some yarn that took their fancy and so I have made the first one for Amelie and Aurelia's and Felix's are still in the works.

Design: Unforgettable Hat
Designer: Crochet In Color
Hook: 5mm/US H
Yarn: Moda Vera Bouvardia - Bramble (70% acrylic 30% wool)

Finally I had been lusting after a large scarf I had seen on Pinterest and was so sad to see it was only for sale from Renaissance Dying in the French Pyrenees and the way the Australian dollar is and the cost of postage it became just too expensive to justify. Then a little web surfing one day accidentally uncovered a place in Australia that had two kits in stock at a reasonable price, with free postage (even better). So now in my hot little hands I have the whole kit with 75 different shades of very fine wool for Bohemian Rhapsody.

First Finishes for 2014

Wow, last week saw me make the biggest finish ever! When I put the last stitch in I laid it out on the coffee table and gazed at it for some time. Four years of stitching and I can finally say Hannah Lancaster is done.

Late last year, as I was playing with my stash, I decided it was time to start stitching some of my kits to make room to better organise my stash a little better. So here is my first piece to be completed.

I also thought I would show you what my Mother gave me for Christmas last year. It's a hand beaded scissor case and needle holder and a beautiful silver thimble.

A Busy Past Year!

As many of you would know in October we had some of the worst fires the Blue Mountains had seen in 40 years. My DH was out almost everyday for two weeks fighting fires. Sadly his sister lost her home during this fire. She is doing much better and has purchased a new home and is settling into that with the family.

I was fortunate to get out and fight fires on two night shifts while my DH stayed home and looked after the children. It had been many years since I had last been out on a fire truck, but those 12 hour shifts were a blissful escape from my day to day life. (PS. That's me closest to the camera in the bottom photo)

At the end of November the family took a trip to Tasmania for my cousin's wedding. Both of the girls were flower girls and they looked so beautiful. We then took a few days of sightseeing before heading back home. Enjoy the photos!
